However, surely we would have noticed that the yog venues are always half-empty when we watch the games on television? And this is despite the fact that the Singapore YOG Organizing Committee had recently announced the majority of the tickets have been sold out.

It turns out that the MOE had bought tickets from the market and distributed them to students who were 'willing' to go. In fact, some students had been coerced by their schools to attend the games and generate 'support' for it. However, some of these students leaves the games early after having their attendance taken - resulting in the half-filled stadiums we see everyday.

I find the organizing committee's actions deplorable. Though I am not too sure about what really happened, I feel that even if there was poor response to ticket sales, they should just continue selling them to the public, instead of using such methods to generate fake support. The tickets should be left for those who really want to watch the games and cheer Singapore on. On the other hand, the students should not be made to attend the games against their wishes. I hope that they could rectify this problem as soon as possible.

However, no matter what happens, i believe that it is a great achievement for a small country like Singapore to host such a world-class event and it has been very entertaining so far. Just as i was writing this post, i realised that Singapore had just won another medal. I think we have done very well in this event and hope that Singapore could keep it up:)Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-22128132545153346052010-07-19T18:22:00.000+08:002010-08-19T18:32:36.285+08:00Merchant of VeniceThis term, our class is having Literature lessons regarding the play, "Merchant of Venice", written by none other than William Shakespeare. I have read some parts of the book but, to be honest, I don't understand much at all! I sort of understand the storyline but some things said by the character are hard to understand. Luckily, the book has helped us with this problem, by explaining what each phrase or word mean at the adjacent page.
The book seems interesting, I heard of the storyline before but i don't know where. My favourite character in the book so far is Antonio. Who would take up such a huge loan just for a friend? One of the main themes of the book seems to be prejudice. However, it seems that the prejudice in this book is different from that in To Kill A Mockingbird. In MOV, the prejudice portrayed is more of religious prejudice rather than racial.
I look forward to analyzing the play in class and hope that it is as interesting as it seems to be at first glance.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-2403335216443486652010-08-19T17:17:00.002+08:002010-08-19T17:29:43.459+08:00Independent Studies in HCI - My thoughts about itWell, during the principal's dialogue on Tuesday, our topic for discussion was about the new subject, Independent Studies. It consists of 50% from our project's day grades and the other half from ACE(I think). As the dialogue went on, i seemed to be getting even more anxious by the second. If you fail your independent studies, you would have to go to 3Q, how scary was that? TO make matters worse, I had done badly in this year's projects day. I could not make it past the semi-finals. Then, i thought about the Ace i have done for this term - virtually none. I was getting worried. However, I would be safe if i managed to max my ace. However, what about the people who did very badly for projects day? They could not even make the grade even if they maxed their ace? Isn't switching them to the Q class too harsh on them? I think that the IS grade should be included in the overall msg, without it having such huge importance by itself. By including it in the msg for sec 2s, we could try to pull down our msg through other subjects, rather then the decision being made after evaluating one subject alone. Isn't that too harsh?Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-53373035960522721632010-08-19T17:11:00.002+08:002010-08-19T17:16:21.273+08:00Term 3 tests over!Today, we took our last test for term 3 - history. Over the past few days, there were tests in almost every subject- math, biology, LA and some others. Some were quite easy some were not. I haven't studied so hard for ages. After the tests were over, i felt relieved. For the past week i had spent so much time studying for these tests. I just hope i did well in the tests. But for now, i can finally take a break and of course, start doing my ACE.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-91566524618788570322010-06-24T15:51:00.002+08:002010-06-24T16:12:03.957+08:00Rainbow DeathRainbow Death
America did not foresee
Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!
Expecting others to pay a high price.
Now thinking twice?
Toll on the innocent and unborn.

Omnipotent and disregarding who will mourn.
Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead.
All the deceit continues to spread.
Nefariously America led astray -
Generations untold WILL pay -
Execrable effects of agent orange spray!

Hubert Wilson

Background Information

This poem speaks of the use of 'Agent Orange' in the Vietnam War that has caused appalling death and suffering – not only to its intended victims, the Vietnamese people, but also the service personnel that used or even just came into contact with it.
According to Wikipedia, 'Agent Orange' is the code name for a herbicide and defoliant—contaminated with TCDD—used by the U.S. military in its Herbicidal Warfare program during the Vietnam War.

According to Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects.[1]

During the production of Agent Orange (as well as Agents Purple, Pink, and Green) dioxins were produced as a contaminant, which have caused numerous health problems for the millions of people who have been exposed. Agents Blue and White were part of the same program but did not contain dioxins.

This poem reminds us that the detrimental effects of modern warfare may still linger on despite the war itself being over.

The author himself was also affects by 'Agent Orange'.
He said,"
I am a Vietnam War veteran (as are my four brothers) who served in the USAF Security Service. I, along with a dozen or so intelligence school grads, prepped for about 14 months at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas, before anticipating being sent to Vietnam or elsewhere in southeast Asia in 1970. About half ended up in Da Nang (an Agent Orange hotspot) in the 6924th Security Squadron. The rest of us were assigned to Shemya Island, Alaska, with the 6984th Security Squadron, and what eventually was a MORE contaminated environment than Da Nang!

My health problems started approximately 15 years ago with unexplained headaches and limb pains. Four years ago my central nervous system radically deteriorated with Parkinsonian type tremors, severe headaches, progressive limb pains, etc. No physician has ever diagnosed the specific illness. NO VA physician has ever rendered ANY medical assistance! My number one educated guess is the heavily contaminated drinking water at Shemya during my year there as an intelligence analyst. Organo-phosphate toxins may not run their toxic course until 20 to 30 years after initial exposure.

Since my brain still functions moderately well (and I have mobility issues), I have turned to writing just like my late Father and the late singer (and writer) Johnny Cash."Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-64759013766760657132010-05-26T16:07:00.003+08:002010-05-26T16:56:52.835+08:00Home Learning Task 2- Children in the DarknessChildren in the Darkness

There are children in the darkness
Who have not seen the light
There are children in the darkness
Who someone will teach to fight

Chalk and blackboards will not be
To this door there is no key
From this life they can not flee
And these children are not free

Could we simply light a candle
Could we give them half a chance
Could we teach them how to read
Could we teach them how to dance

Or will a war consume them
Their body and their soul
Will their life and blood be poured
Down some endless thirsty hole

Back into the darkness
From which there is no flight
Back into the darkness
Into which there shines no light
Henry M Bechtold

Point of view
The point of view in this poem is that of an adult who understands the plight of these children and the horrors of war. He also desperately want to free the children of these their lives engulfed in war and gives them hope and happiness. This could be seen from stanza 4, which describes the horrors of war. The repeated use of 'could we' in stanza 3 seems to be convey the message that there is a need for us to help these children.

Situation and Setting
The setting of poem is in Vietnam, where children were taught how to fight and then harshly sent to war and more often than not, to their deaths. It would also be hard for them to escape this sort of life. Stanza 1 line 4 - 'who someone will teach to fight' tells us that the children were given basic training. It could be inferred from Stanza 2 ' there is no key' and 'are not free' that the children were unable to escape the horrors of war and that they have no freedom. 'their life and blood be poured down some endless thirsty hole' shows that the children usually died through the course of war and lives would continue to be lost in the 'endless thirsty hole'.

Language/Diction
The rhyme in this poem mostly follows the ABAB form.
Stanza 1:Darkness/Darkness, light/fight
Stanza 2:be/flee, key/free
Stanza 3:chance/dance
Stanza 4:soul/hole
Stanza 5:flight/light

Personal Response
After reading the poem, I feel children are innocent and that they should not be dragged into wars. It is not worth throwing away their lives away just for their country. War is harmful to the society and should be avoided.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-59667906155412941452010-05-26T13:52:00.002+08:002010-05-26T16:06:39.463+08:00Home Learning Task 1- Children in the DarknessChildren in the Darkness

There are children in the darkness
Who have not seen the light
There are children in the darkness
Who someone will teach to fight

Chalk and blackboards will not be
To this door there is no key
From this life they can not flee
And these children are not free

Could we simply light a candle
Could we give them half a chance
Could we teach them how to read
Could we teach them how to dance

Or will a war consume them
Their body and their soul
Will their life and blood be poured
Down some endless thirsty hole

Back into the darkness
From which there is no flight
Back into the darkness
Into which there shines no light

Henry M Bechtold

This poem was written by Henry M Bechtold in 2009, when he was in Vietnam. He had always enjoyed his trips to Vietnam, so much that he even describes it as his mistress. He first visited Vietnam in 1967 and again in 1969, 2003,2006 and 2009.However, there were times when what he saw in Vietnam breaks his heart. Initially, he was planning to write on the treatment suffered by the girls working in the park. However, he then saw a picture of a young boy with a helmet and an automatic rifle while watching the news in his hotel room. Thus, he got the inspiration for this poem, letting his emotions flow.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-29439965614650142192010-03-02T11:33:00.005+08:002010-03-02T11:49:37.479+08:00Intrapersonal b)Which character would I like to play in To Kill a Mockingbird?B)

I would like to be Atticus Finch if I were to play in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Of all the characters, i find him the wisest and he seems to know everything. I also like his character, in which he is humble despite his various abilties, for example, having a good shot. He also stood up for Tom Robinson, a black man, when he was wrongly accused by the Ewells. This is particularly commendable at a time when the coloured people were discriminated against and when most laywers would not even take up jobs defending a black man. But Atticus had a immense sense of righteousness and he stood up for what he thought was right, much to the dismay of the people of Maycomb county. It is this act that makes me want to play as him.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-47635969049441460812010-03-02T11:11:00.004+08:002010-03-02T11:37:03.045+08:00Multiple Intelligence Report<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 224px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb-9FXO3GtxN37LJ6fZy7-IFEeIIYD4L_KB-dSVHKMqZGstDypwyaHW2wBrkU0HwYBYijOSaAKnYy5tIjuSpEMjA8P71d1ueI_U3DnJZIGHB-UFaIPyNQKtgDGGYVdnSPO4UHonh8T0is/s320/Multiple+Intelligence+test.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443872808740482610" />
Having done the multiple intelligence test for LA home learning, here are the results. Finally have some time to slack and of course, post on my blog:) But for today and tomorrow, HCI is conducting home learning. And we don't have to go to school! Though some people might like the idea, I actually prefer going to school. I can't really focus at home, especially when using the computer. Anyway i have done most of the assignments for home learning today so i guess tomorrow won't be as tiring as today. Now that tests are over, school should be much more fun over the next two weeks with sabbaticals and other activities.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-66575097650635377942010-02-21T15:01:00.000+08:002010-02-27T16:07:23.010+08:00Test Week:(There are going to be a lot of tests next week. There's history, math, geography and a couple more, spread over to whole week. Thus, I had been busy studying for the past few days and i guess i should still be doing that for the next few days to come. Also, I have planning to complete all the ACE needed for Chinese and LA this term. I guess this is the result fo slacking for the past few weeks:(Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-65622798096488106332010-01-24T17:54:00.002+08:002010-01-24T18:00:35.418+08:00Hi guys:)First post in 2010:). Who is he? He is a poet, a translator, and also writes short fiction stories. He has also been a professor of English at Columbia University since 2005.Finally, he is my favourite poet!

This is because I feel that he has great ideas for his poems and liked the way he views several things. For example, in the poem, Eating Poetry, it talks about about the character eating poetry which I guess is due to the person in the poem's dislike of poetry. I didn't really understand the poem initially as the idea for the poem is kinda weird. Though I am not interested in poetry, I found this poem interesting and enjoyed reading it.

He also wrote several collections of poetry including the Blizzard of one(1998), The story of our lives(1973), Dark Harbor(1993), The Continuous Life(1990), Man and Camel(2006), Selected poems(1980) and lastly, Reasons for Moving(1968).

The three poems written by Mark Strand are Eating Poetry, Keeping things whole and the room.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-9788564723138938932009-06-25T13:14:00.003+08:002009-06-25T14:56:39.367+08:00Is progress necessarily beneficial for society? Is progress necessarily beneficial for society? I don't think so. I feel that progress can be either beneficial or detrimental to the society. There are times when the society start to progess but it does not work out and it causes harm to the society. For example, in "Village by the Sea", They decided to bulid a fertilizer factory in the village of Thul. But jobs would not be given to the villagers of Thul as they do not know much about fertilizers. The land used by the villagers for farming would also be used to build the factory. Thus, the villagers, like Hari, would have to find work in the city, or try to adapt to the change, which is not very easy in my opinion.
Another example is Biju's boat. It signals the progress of the society in the village. Technology is getting more advanced and this would help catch more fishes.from these two examples, we can conclude that progress is not necessarily beneficial for society.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-3451448999017639332009-06-22T11:29:00.002+08:002009-06-22T11:44:03.415+08:00My favourite part of VBTSI guess my favourite part of "Village by the sea" is the ending. Not suprising since its a happy ending and everything turned out great. There wasn't anything much to like about the other parts of the story due to the fact that most of it was about the problems Hari and Lila faced.

At the end of the book, Hari managed to earn some money during his time in Bombay and learnt that we have to adapt to the changes in the world around us. He decided to set up a poultry farm and help others mend watches as plenty of people are coming to Thul once the factory is built. With the help of the De Silvas, their mother was sent to the hospital and recovered from her illness. Their father also turned over a new leaf. So, it was a happy ending and my favourite part of the book.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-78314926273862185082009-06-13T11:36:00.002+08:002009-06-13T12:05:25.895+08:00Favourite character in Village by the seaI had read the book "Village by the sea" for the literature test. So... who is my favourite character in the book? i guess that would be Mr.Panwallah. I find that he is very helpful, kind and cheerful. When Hari went ot work in Jagu's restaurant, he helped him a lot and even taught Hari how to mend watches. He taught Hari that we should adapt to changes in the world around us. In Hari's case, he should set up a poultry farm and help to mend watches for a living. Mr.Panwallah also brought Hari out on several occasions, helping Hari during his time in Bombay. Even though Hari was just a boy working at Jagu's restaurant, he was willing to help him and made his life easier in Bombay. Thus, Mr.Panwallah is my favourite character.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-14244939965883718042009-06-08T11:07:00.002+08:002009-06-08T11:47:06.649+08:00I rather be the city rat than the country ratCity rat or country rat? Both of them have their advantages and i will list them down below.

City rat
I guess life as a city rat would be alot more comfortable than being a country rat. Technology is also more advanced in the city. There are computers, televisions etc. Thus, it makes life more comfortable and interesting. We are also able to get all our daily neccessities in the city easily.

Country rat
Life as a country rat would be very different from life as a city rat. There isn't any computers, televisions, refrigerators etc, making life very difficult. Some people are poor and might not have enough. But despite all of these, being a country rat can be fun. You could go fishing and other leisure activities to have fun and pass time.

In conclusion, There are advantages and disadvantages in being either a city rat or a country rat. But if i had to choose, I rather be a city rat.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-10323287767930244262009-04-21T11:04:00.002+08:002009-04-21T11:06:50.094+08:00Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-48010028792303669312009-04-04T12:44:00.002+08:002009-04-04T13:22:36.525+08:00Play about Tan kah KeeHi everyone, sorry for not posting for so long! First, let me update everyone on what I had done for the past one month. I had withdrawn from my japanese lessons:P. No more rushing for classes after school and reaching home at about 8p.m on Thursdays. I also started doing media tech duties very often, and thus learning a lot along the way.

Yesterday, I watched a play about Tan Kah Kee,along with the rest of the sec 1s. The school has made it compulsory. I enjoyed the show. Although I don't think that it is a really great show, i find it very meaningful and at some points quite touching. Through this show, I have learnt a lot about Tan Kah Kee and his contributions to Hwa Chong.

I would try to post once every week from now on so please visit my blog.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-44714390983385963632009-03-03T21:09:00.003+08:002009-03-03T21:33:55.663+08:00Nothing is impossibleMiss Oh Siew May, aged 38, has cerebral palsy. For those who do not know what that is, it is a condition caused by brain damage and affects the muscular control and coordination. This has made her an easy target for cruel jokes and discrimination. Her family members has also suffered several tragedies

But what did she do? She didn't feel depressed, she did not pity herself and felt that life was unfair. Instead, she was optimistic and did things that people with this condition would not. For example, she Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia!Last December, she wrote a book on her life story. It was named 'Scaling Walls'. Despite facing several difficulties in publishing the book, she managed to do it with the help of some close friends who started a company. Now, the book has already sold 3000 copies.

I feel that other people infected with cerebral palsy would follow in the footsteps of Miss Oh. I also hope that Miss Oh would be able to lead a better life. I think that this article is an event story as a gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China killed at least 74 miners yesterday. This event has also caused 60 other miners to be trapped underground only to be rescued several hours later. Due to this event, the power supply has also been cut off. Some miners also fainted due to the lack of oxygen. Hence, through all the deaths and injuries of the miners, i think that we can conclude that this incident is a tragedy that happened to the miners working there.

After this incident, the Chinese government has vowed to make working at the mines in China safer. Most of the miners has been rushed to the hospital as they suffered carbon monoxide poisonong during the incident. Hence, i feel that the rescuers have done thier best in saving the poor miners.

I feel sad about the deaths of the innocent miners working there. They had done nothing wrong. In my opinion, the miners working in other parts of the world should learn from this incident. They should try to prevent such incidents from happening again.

I guess the best way to make the mines safer is to try to be more careful and alert. People coundn't just stop mining because of the dangers as they have to mine for natural resources.
I hope such incidents would not happen again and people reading this post will feel the same way as me.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-44215824545908457412009-02-23T21:25:00.002+08:002009-02-23T21:43:16.634+08:00Horrible dayThis is my second post for today but since the first post was an assignment, i think that I should post again. Today, I started off the day in quite a nice way, getting A1 for history. But things sort of gotten horribly wrong after that. First, there was a chinese test. I think most people who know me should know that my chinese sucks :( So i kinda hate chinese tests.

Secondly, after grabbing something to eat at the canteen, I went to the bus stop. But while walking to the bus stop, it started raining very heavily. It was only a slight drizzle before. I immediately ran towards the shelter. But what's the point? It was raining so heavily that the shelter was practically useless. In the end, i was drenched by the time I reached the bus stop.

Next, I had to wait for half an hour for the bus. But halfway along the road home, the bus broke down. The tyre had punctured. So I had to waiting for the bus and then blah blah blah. By the time i reached home, i was so damn tired. Luckily there wasn't much homework. Now I go play computer games.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-82913691672539175182009-02-15T00:51:00.002+08:002009-02-15T01:10:10.555+08:00Sleeping in classNothing else to post so talk about people sleeping in class. Although it seems wrong, but I think we cannot blame them. Lessons could get really boring sometimes, especially chinese. Me myself tend to feel drowsy during chinese and japanese lessons. I never had this problem before in primary school before since my chinese teacher was not boring at all and I hadn't started taking japanese. Luckily, our chinese teacher this year is very nice, never scold us. Haha.

I am also getting really bored recently. No fun games released recently. I haven't played my wii for two months now and playing my ds is just not enjoyable. Wah now already 1a.m. Feel like listening to some music. Someone please post some comments on my blog! Thanks!Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-47710211877461454872009-02-07T13:05:00.003+08:002009-02-07T13:19:31.271+08:00Japanese testLast Thursday, I received my previous japanese test. I failed. 17/37. When I received my test, the teacher said' YOU BETTER READ UP MORE!!!!!!!!!' So scary. After that I got another japanese test. I did even worse. If I am lucky, the most I would get is about 2/10.I look forward to this thursday.(as if) I seriously feel like quitting third language. So tough. Also very tiring. But my parents don't allow me to quit. Guess I have to work harder for the upcoming hiragana test and learn katakana. So anyway, please check my blog often. I would try to post more.Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3031451650412710690.post-37039381109549968802009-01-25T23:18:00.001+08:002009-01-25T23:44:53.401+08:00Back to my primary school
Sorry for not posting for so long!! Kinda busy with some stuff. On Friday, school ended horribly early so I grabbed the opportunity to go back to my primary school. I took bus 157 back to the bus stop near my primary school with my friends. After the tiring journey back to school, the security guard did not allow us to go up to the second floor as the CNY celebrations were still going on. Meanwhile, we just went to the 7-eleven just opposite the school. I just drank a large slurpee. then I had my lunch at the school canteen. I missed eating there! Great variety of food, food taste fantastic, and very cheap too. Yeah, the canteen is great, unlike certain canteens...

Then, I was finally allowed to meet my teacher. Could not find my old class at first. I thought it was gone. Luckily it just moved to the second floor. Don't know why they did it. I did not looked for my chinese teacher. I just did not want to hear her nag at me. I had a great time. I also met some of my old friends.Hope to go back soon. So damn fun!!!
Ho Jia Weihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06747093060100517999noreply@blogger.com1
